We are excited to announce that Westminster City Council, alongside partner Veolia, have won MRW’s The National Recycling Forum National Recycling 2021 Partnership Excellence Award – Public/Private sector.

Recognised for Westminster City Council and Veolia’s campaign to safely reopen the West End

Westminster City Council and our partner Veolia have won the Partnership Excellence Award in recognition for our campaign to safely reopen the West End.

This included keeping streets clean and sanitised. Between May and September  2020, we performed 600 hours of extensive deep cleaning across 85 locations in the West End. Part of this cleansing challenge included 50 street closures implemented across the West End, which were organised to help boost trade and aid in economic recovery. These areas needed to be cleaned and disinfected around the closure periods each day.

Four local depots within the West End supported the initiative by enabling 791 litterbins to be washed and sanitised during the summer period.

Westminster City Council also launched a ‘Covid ready’ disinfection  service to deep clean, disinfect potentially contaminated surfaces and help businesses prepare for safe reopening.

Deep cleaning our streets and amending waste collection and street cleansing services were not our only goals during our West End reopening efforts. We also developed several campaigns to attract visitors back to the West End. This included installing 2,500 signs to direct the public around the hospitality sector.

To help businesses get on board, comprehensive toolkits were delivered for use across the West End with promotional posters, signage for hand sanitising stations, window stickers and foot markers for social distancing.

The Westminster City Council commercial waste team also provided advice on waste presentation which was tailored locally to individual businesses, particularly those located on streets where street closures were in operation.

Additionally, targeted social media campaigns helped lead to a 38% increase in footfall by September.

These campaigns and interventions not only reassured residents and visitors but also helped Westminster City Council’s commercial waste and recycling services support the local business community into the summer months.

Veolia partnered with Westminster City Council  both during and post lockdown to perform extensive support work in local communities. This included undertaking food deliveries and using their communications network to promote cleanliness and safety.

About the National Recycling Awards

MRW’s The National Recycling Forum brings together both the National Recycling Awards and The National Recycling Conference to gather experts from across the recycling and waste management world.

The National Recycling Awards seek to recognise and reward excellence for the advancement of the sector.

The awards, alongside the National Recycling Conference, were presented on the 8th of December 2021 at the Hilton London in Park Lane.

Westminster City Council’s previous awards

The Partnership Excellence Award is Westminster City Council’s second recognition in the month of December 2021. The first was the Commercial Fleet of the Year 2021 Green Fleet Award for our new fleet of 60 electric vehicles that includes e-trikes for litter picking, e-sweepers and electric refuse collection vehicles (e-RCVs).

We’re also proud of our award in the Circular Economy Success category at the Awards for Excellence, for our work upcycling end-of-life diesel trucks to some of our new electric collection trucks.

Last year, Westminster City Council was also recognised as the most sustainable fleet in the country with the Future Fleet Award at the LAPV Future Fleet Awards 2020.

We are thrilled to continue being recognised for our efforts to keep Westminster safe and clean. Our goal is to keep helping businesses follow Covid guidelines that will drive customer traffic and keep everyone safe.
